Longmont Facility Synopsis

Slideshow

The Longmont Campus of the Boulder Regional Fire Training Center is situated on 13 acres near First Avenue and Martin Street in Longmont. The initial phase of construction was completed in the fall of 2006. Additional components have been added each year as funding allows.

Burn Building

The burn building is designed to provide realistic fire drills in a single family home. It is a two story structure with a living room, den, kitchen and attached garage on the ground floor with two bedrooms, a bathroom and hallway on the second floor. Crews can make entry from the ground floor and work their way up into the building, or from a second floor staging area and advance down the stairs simulating a basement fire. Fires in this building are fueled with pallets and straw.

Tower

A four story tower is equipped with stairwell, elevator shaft and an open area on each floor where partitions can be constructed to create a variety of configurations for search and rescue drills or ladder and hose training. There are numerous window configurations, manholes, lift out floor sections, roof hatches, crawl spaces and rope anchors throughout the building and on the roof. Drill opportunities are limited only by the imagination of the instructor and gravity. The building is not designed for live fire but can be charged quite effectively with theatrical smoke.

Pavilion

A covered open air classroom is available on site with seating for 24 students. This structure also houses restrooms and maintenance garage.

Driving Pad

A gravel driver training area is available with adequate room to set up the NFPA or NAPD driving courses.

Rubble Pile

There is a large pile of concrete rubble on site as well as several large blocks of concrete, a variety of utility pipe, power poles and other props that can be used for search, cribbing and shoring or building collapse exercises. Instructors can also use this area to bring in vehicles for extrication training or combine a few wrecked cars with some of the other props to create truly challenging rescue drills.

Hazardous Materials

There are two tanker trailers on site, one on its side, that can used to simulate a variety of hazardous materials events. There are also various cylinder and valve props available for Technician level training. The haz-mat props are generally reserved for sanctioned Technician courses.
